Week 2

Drawing Projects:
Weeds and Drawing machine.

On Monday 21/09/2015, during the first of my course briefings in the lecture theatre I first learned of the drawing projects that would be the focus of my course for the first two weeks.  Week 1, I would be working on a project titled Weeds, and week 1 and 2, I would be looking at a project called drawing machines.
Weeds was an interesting topic as I've never considered these unwanted plants before, However after having read the brief, I had a variety of different ideas. I like the concept that the weeds are unwanted guests, or rather misunderstood strangers. I chose to draw a piece of seaweed that I had found on the beech the week before at Great Yarmouth. I chose sea weed because once upon dry land it is truly out of place, out of water the weed shrivels and dies.

Above are two photos of the piece of sea weed that i chose to study.

Above is an observational drawing that I made using pencil, in a group workshop, which I found quite interesting, I could see how other peoples work progressed as I made my own, I was able to see how they worked, and what they saw, as in which details I missed and they had noticed. which was strange as it made me realize that we all see the world differently.
The drawing itself was annoying to make, I found that focusing on the details so hard was in a way a form of documenting an existing object, rather than interpreting the weed through my own practice. Therefore I then made a larger A1 drawing using charcoal, I aimed to work quickly and lively, so that I could try to convey the lines and curving shapes that I saw in the weed. Below is the charcoal drawing that I made of the sea weed, I far prefer this version of the drawing.
This weekend, on the Saturday I went to watch the new film "Legend", a film about the Kray twins, it was interesting to see this new take on the infamous pair, yet it was especially interesting to me as it re inspired old ideas and projects that surrounded my practice throughout my A level art and design course. Ideas about split personality, dark negative emotions, which can become all consuming, However overall, after studying Ronnie Kray as depicted in the film as a paranoid schizophrenic, the primary theme which I used to focus on that im now quite interested in again is distorted figures (distortion through emotion). Below is the film poster for Legend, which I found on this link http://cdn2-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/gallery/legend-set-photos-1402603140/lgd_tsr1sheet5_rgb_0622_5.jpg
